Language Learning Talk
Language learners helping language learners learn
language
Language Learning Talk is a new moderated e-mail
discussion group where language learners ask and answer questions, share ideas
and advice, and discuss articles that appear in Language Learning for Language
Learners, all via e-mail. We will pursue discussion on how to best learn
languages, seeking input from all.

"The Rules"
No one likes a lot of rules, but the follow common-sense
guidelines will maximize the value of Language Learning Talk for
everyone:
- Messages sent to Language Learning Talk should
discuss language learning, not language teaching. (Several other lists are
available for language teachers.)
- Messages sent to Language Learning Talk should not
ask specific questions about specific languages. "How do you say 'dog'
in French?" would not be approved. (Many lists on learning specific
languages already exist. We want to discuss language learning at a more
general/universal level.)
Bad post: "How do you say 'dog' in French?"
Good post: "How I learned French"
Bad post: "Where is a good place to learn Italian in the U.S.?"
Good post: "What's the best way to make the most of a continuing-ed
class?"
Bad post: "I'm going to Germany on Friday! What is the weather like
there?"
Good post: "Has TPR worked for you?"
- This is a moderated list, and commercials/advertisements
will not be approved. Feel free to comment on specific products, though.
- Language Learning Talk is a public forum. What you
write is of course yours but I would like to reserve the right to use any
messages you send to Language Learning Talk in our internet archives,
in Language Learning for Language Learners, in "Best of
LL-talk" compilations, etc.
- Debate and disagreement are welcome, but all posts should
maintain respect for other posters. No "flames" will be accepted.
What "respect" means is somewhat relative: by necessity I as the
list moderator will have to be the final judge. (I do like good debate and
discussion; just don't make it personal.)
- Because participants of Language Learning Talk live
in many different parts of the world, please avoid any religious or
political content in your posts. This may mean that you need to modify your
"sig line" when you post to this list. I would like to reserve the
right to edit out any religious or political content in your posts before
distributing them to the list.
- Please do not reply "Me too!" with nothing of
value added. We don't want to needlessly fill up our e-mail boxes with
low-value posts.
- When you reply to a message, please keep only the parts of
the original post that relate to the point that you want to raise. Please
delete the rest of the original message, as this will minimize the size of
your e-mail while maximizing its value to the other participants..
- Posts that are totally off-topic will not be approved.
- In general reply to the group, but if your message is
obviously intended for only one person, please do not send it to the group.
For example, "Hi Julie! I didn't realize you were on this list!"
would not be approve for mass distribution.
- Please feel free to forward any Language Learning Talk
messages to your friends and colleagues. Please forward the whole message so
that they will also have the opportunity to subscribe.
- If you ever want to unsubscribe, just send a blank e-mail
to LL-talk-unsubscribe@egroups.com.
